Chapter Fifteen

Kel had only been asleep for an hour when her bladder woke her up. Careful not to wake the trainees around her, she tiptoed to the latrine. The door was open and the lights off, standard protocol for securing the dormitory.

"Why are you up?" Brenton asked donning the dorm guard belt and flashlight.

"Had to pee," Kel replied with a sideways grin. "Have fun on dorm guard duty."

"She will," Hernandez answered as she exited A Bay. "Who could be bored with me to keep them company?" It was a basic security procedure to have two dorm guards on duty. It not only put an emphasis on the wingman concept, but it helped ensure better security.

Kel walked into the empty latrine, pulling on the light switch as she headed toward the shiny toilet stall. One of the morning and evening chores was to ensure that the latrine stayed immaculate, so the women spent hours shining the steel and scrubbing the floors and sinks. As she neared the stall, a subtle breathing noise took her attention. She approached the last stall with caution and slowly opened the door. Trainee Davis, one of the element leaders, looked back at her with fear in her eyes.

Kel took in the tear-streaked face of the usually strong woman, wondering what could upset her so much. "Are you okay?" It was a dumb question, but Kel's sleep-deprived mind couldn't think of anything else to say.

"Do I look alright?" Davis questioned, trying her best to regain her composure.

"No...I'm sorry...It's just...what's wrong?" Kel sputtered, trying to figure out how to talk to the woman who usually made her life a living hell. Davis was known to be a major bitch, and her high and mighty attitude was the subject of many discussions.

"It's not important, Trainee Johnson," Davis replied as she began to regain her pride. "I'll be okay. Just go back to bed." Her tears had dried, but the pink tint on her cheeks remained, staining her face in pain.

"I'm not leaving until you tell me what's going on," Kel persisted.

"I told you it's nothing," Davis said, but even as she did, tears started to trail her cheeks.

Kel wrapped her arms around the bigger woman, not really thinking but knowing by instinct that it was the right thing to do. She felt Davis slump into her shoulder as her body went weak and her bearing completely slipped. Kel ran her hand up and down her comrade’s back, whispering soothing words of encouragement in her ear. When at last Davis' crying ceased, she again inquired the source of the woman's pain.

"I'm sorry for troubling you," Davis told Kel, suddenly embarrassed by her lack of control.

"It didn't trouble me, but I still would like to know what hurt you," Kel said "If you are comfortable telling me."

"Well, I guess it couldn't hurt, but I don't think it will make me feel better."

"It might," Kel chided.

"Okay, here goes," Davis began, taking a big breath. "Last night, I got a letter...from my boyfriend. We had been going out for like two years.
